THE PROBLEM OF NORMALITY IN PSYCHIATRY: PHILOSOPHICAL ANALYSIS

The paper demonstrates that there is impossible to define the notion of mental normality in our dynamically changing culture. The social, commercial and scientific aspects of psychiatry are analyzed. Only in the scientific one there is possible to try to discuss unnormality. The author proposes the notion of adequacy which is the most full and genuine being, with the least possible distortions of the subjects basic existential relations (to the Others, to the world, to himself, to the transcendence).

V. R. Butcke (1845 1903) was one of the most famous psychiatrists and specialist in public health in late XIX early XX century. He has been undeservedly forgotten in our time. Butcke had an enormous influence on the development of in hospital and community mental health care in Russia. He was the creator of the most advanced psychiatric hospital (Alekseev hospital in Moscow), occupational therapy, nursing service, and other new, more humane forms of medical care to psychiatric patients.
